Cold Laser Pain Relief gives each new patient a pack containing handy information and miscellaneous tips. I thought that this particular page from the pack cannot be emphasised too much, as Vitamin D affects so many different aspects of health.
- CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
If Vitamin D3 levels are low, the risk of Myocardial Infarction is twice as high
Int. Jour. Epidemiol 1990
- HYPERTENSION
Blood pressure is higher in winter, northern latitudes and with increased skin pigmentation, all conditions consistent with lower Vitamin D3 levels.
J Cardiology
- DIABETES TYPE II
Metformin improves insulin sensitivity by 13%. Higher Vitamin D status in this study correlated with a 60% improvement in insulin sensitivity. Vitamin D may prevent the progression of Type II to Type I Diabetes.
- OSTEOARTHRITIS
The progression of Osteoarthritis is lessened by adequate Vitamin D3. Improvement of Osteomalacia and Pageant’s Disease has also been documented.
- MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
MS is rare in sunny climates. A study of 10 patients with MS for 2 years, treated with 5000IU Vitamin D daily found a reduction in the number of relapses and an absence of adverse effects.
- DEPRESSION
A study in the treatment of Season Affective Disorder (SAD) revealed that 44 subjects supplemented with 1000IU of Vitamin D daily, had significant improvement of mood.
- EPILEPSY
Low Vitamin D decreases the threshold for and the incidence of seizures. Some anticonvulsant medications interfere with the formation of Vitamin D.
- MIGRAINE HEADACHES
Studies show a reduction in the frequency, duration and severity of menstrual migraines if women with Vitamin D deficiency took a daily supplement of 1,600IU of Vitamin D3.
- POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME
Vitamin D deficiency is common in women with PCOS.
- MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN
A study found Vitamin D deficiency in 83% of 299 patients with low back pain. Supplementation with Vitamin D decreased pain in almost 100% of these patients in 3 months.
- AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS
Besides MS, the following diseases are also associated with Vitamin D deficiency:-
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Lupus
- Grave’s Disease
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Scleroderma
- CANCER PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
It has been proposed that thousands of lives per year could be saved from a reduction in cancer mortality by supplementing with Vitamin D3 or by providing adequate exposure to UV light. Inadequate exposure to sunlight is associated with the following cancers:
- Breast/ ovary
- Colon
- Prostate / Bladder
- Oesophagus
- Kidney
- Lung
- Pancreas
- Rectum
- Stomach
- Uterus
- Non-Hodgins Lymphoma.
- FIBROMYALGIA
50% of patients with Fibromyalgia are Vitamin D deficient.
Journal of Rheumatology 2001.
- PSORIASIS
Psoriasis patients treated with oral Vitamin D3 or the top active Vitamin D metabolite Calcitriol, showed improvement in the majority of cases. It also improves Vitiligo.
- OSTEOPOROSIS
Trials in France and USA demonstrate a 30-40% reduction of hip and all bone fractures with a 50,000 IU Vitamin D3 capsule monthly, combined with 600mg of Calcium daily. Subjects taking Prednisone or Cortisone are recommended to take 50,000 IU Vitamin D3 monthly, with 1000mg Calcium a day to offset the bone thinning effect.
Makes you think doesn’t it?
