“I have a bad back partially from playing the drums and singing. I used to have to hold my body in such a position that my spine got out of alignment.”

Overview

At Cold Laser Pain Relief we offer an effective treatment for acute and ongoing lower back pain, including sciatica.   Lower back pain is usually suffered as a large, broadband region of pain but it is our experience that the actual site of the initial and recurring injury is a microscopic soft tissue tear or strain.

Laser technology allows us to treat these soft tissue injuries at the microscopic level. Providing a clear understanding of the actual cause of the pain makes the whole situation much less distressing for the patient.

In our experience the effect is dramatic in the acute phase, but even more rewarding for those who have suffered for more than six weeks. Often people have been suffering for over three months, and in some cases many years or multiple decades.

Have you been advised that you have “non-specific back pain?”

Many patients say that this is how they have been diagnosed.    There is no such disease as “bad back.”

In Australia alone, work related injury and illness costs the economy over $60 billion which represents around 5% of GDP.   The majority of the claims related to musculo-skeletal injuries, and many were back injuries according to Key Work Health and Safety Statistics, Australia 2012.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia funded a research project called, ‘Are Back Pain Guidelines Wrong?’.

The first sentence in the Summary is, “All current clinical practice guidelines for the management of acute low back pain (LBP) agree that acute LBP has an excellent prognosis with most cases recovering in 4-6 weeks.’

The second sentence tells the true story, “However, the information on prognosis is contradictory and in fact chronic lower back pain could develop in as many as 56% of those with acute low back pain.”

Our experience matches with the second sentence.   And what it really reveals is that if you injured your back, especially at work, it means you have over 50% chance of ending up with chronic back pain.

Some facts about chronic back pain

  • Surgery for back pain is not necessarily effective as most patients revert to their pre-surgery state of pain within 2 years;
  • Unfortunately no drug treatment can cure your pain;
  • Opioid drugs can only ever offer partial relief and are therefore only partially effective.  They do not improve function.

Patients come to us reporting many years of suffering with back pain.   Some are so debilitated that they cannot even sit in a chair in our clinic.   We have seen patients literally crawl into the building and be assisted onto a bed.

When people come to us they say they have tried just about everything and have often been told they need surgery.   But for many the pain worsens and they then start to rely on drugs to get through the day.   They try every alternative treatment.   Ordinary chores become increasingly difficult and people don’t complain anymore because they are told nothing more can be done or there is nothing wrong with them.

Cold Laser Therapy is the application of infra-red lasers, and generally this leads to a gradual improvement.    It may take up to a month before any changes are noticed.  When improvements do happen, some patients find they are able to drive again, and others are able to walk unaided or not stooped over.   Some report that they get half way through their day and only then notice that they haven’t needed to reach for any drugs.

Patient progress is monitored regularly during the pain relief programme and treatment is adjusted accordingly.  Gentle endermologie massages are also included in the process to stimulate lymphatic drainage and assist in reducing flare ups.

    Client Feedback/Testimonial for Cold Laser Pain Relief Clinic

    Helen Johnson 14 October 2019

    When I undertook the cold laser program recommended by the Cold Laser Pain Relief Clinic I was told to expect that my hot, inflamed and painful shoulders, neck and upper and lower back would improve, and that the digital camera images would change from red/white to green/yellow. This in fact was what happened. As a result my posture improved, the pain was gone and has not returned in the two years since my treatment.

    What I did not expect during the treatment was how my brain became energised, and how my determination to do things (that I had been “putting off”) strengthened. For about four years I had been doing neuroscience-based brain training through Posit Science’s “BrainHQ”. Parameters such as Attention, Brain Speed, Memory etc., are measured. Normally it would take me about a year to improve by 1% on any of these parameters, however over the time of my 8 week laser treatment, my score for Attention and Memory increased by 1%, a remarkable improvement in a very short time. The scores have not slipped back to previous levels.

    Immediately after my treatment finished a friend told me that a first year semester course called “Essentials of Neuroscience” was beginning in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Adelaide University. I enrolled in the course and found that my ability to study and retain information felt as good as when I was thirty (40 years earlier). I also found the study to be a lot easier than my study of Biology 1 at Adelaide University 10 years earlier.

    I recently attended the Cold Laser Pain Relief Clinic for arthritis in my hands. I felt again the care and compassion that the therapists extend to their patients and the warm and friendly support of the staff.
